Iз життя дитячого будинку
...Гу-гу! - трубить над ним вiтер, бляхою гримить... Гу-гу!.. А осiнь угорi темнi хмари над ним у отару зганяє, хмари дощем його сiчуть холодним, хмари дощем його поливають. А кругом його - смiтник, кругом бур'яни сухi свистять, кругом дереза.
I вiкна битi в йому, перебитi, i дах латаний, перелатаний, i сам вiн увесь такий закурений, обiдраний, сумний...
Гу-у! - вiтер над ним...
Та - шелесь! бур'янами, та - брязь! вiкнами, та - гур-гур! трухлими дверима. "Одчиняй!" - "А чого тобi, губатий?" - "Мчу iз поля мале покотиполе... одчиняй"!
Курява, темрява, дим...
В їдальнi коло дверей - натовп: дiти, завiдуюча, якась чужа людина в окулярах - чоловiк. Змокрiла стiна полупана; коло стiни стоять двiйко дiвчаток, зубами од холоду бринять - голiсiнькi! Чоловiк i завiдуюча люто змагаються, махають руками, кидають одне одному у вiчi папiрець. Дiти слiдкують - уважнi, зацiкавленi.
- Нащо, кажу, ви з дiтей одежу поздiймали? Ви дiтей попростуджуєте.
- Це позичене. Ви мусите одягнути їх.
- Я вам сказала, що я не маю де їх дiти! В будинок я не вiзьму їх.
- А я де їх дiну? Де? - озвiрився чоловiк. - Третiй день вожуся з будинку в будинок... У мене сили вже немає.
- В наросвiту ведiть! - завiдуюча.
- Ведiть уже самi - я водив!
- Слухайте сюди, ви можете що-небудь розумiти чи нi: будинок на тридцять душ - у мене їх дев'яносто. У мене заразнi хворi. У мене по троє сплять на одному лiжку; у мене нi бiлизни, нi чобiт... У мене хлiба - нi кришки!
- Про мене, хоч на вулицю їх повикидайте!
- I виведу! От голiсiньких i випроваджу, та й побачимо, хто буде за це одповiдати!
Дiвчатка винувато i злякано переводили очi з одного на другого, почувши цеє, одна - в плач, друга - в плач. Завiдуюча зирк на їх - позгиналися, аж посинiли, - не втрималась - у сльози!
Чоловiк в окулярах, користуючи момент, папiрець - на стiл, продерся помiж дiтьми i, нашвидку витираючи на лицi пiт, югнув у дверi. Дiти, що слiдкували, - в регiт!
... Завiдуюча, схлипуючи, одягає гостей у якесь шмаття й присягається комусь: - Нi одного бiльше! Нi лялечки, хоч там що! Краще втечу.
