Les Trains
Sur un chemin compact, de pierraille et de cendre,
A travers bois, taillis, fleuves, moissons et prés,
Sous les pâles matins ou les couchants pourprés,
Les trains quotidiens font le tour de la Flandre.
Jadis, on les voyait rouler presque avec crainte :
Les bœ ufs fuyaient là-bas ; les pigeons familiers
Désertaient les recoins de leurs blancs colombiers.
La mort semblait peser où pesait leur empreinte.
Mais, aujourd’hui, leur va-et-vient au long des champs
Fait à peine trembler le seuil d’une demeure,
Et leur passage annonce aux travailleurs quelle heure
Le jour qui marche et fuit jette au soir approchant.
Les rails d’acier luisant sont encadrés de haies ;
Les chiens et les troupeaux ne les redoutent plus.
Et dans les fentes d’or des plus mornes talus,
Se pavoisent des fleurs et se bombent des baies.
Marbres, grès et granits, fonte, fers et charbons ;
Tous les trésors secrets que les terres lointaines
Cachent aux flancs obscurs des monts, sous les fontaines,
Apparaissent en Flandre, au dos des lourds wagons.
