Наприкінці минулого століття європейські вчені почали вести мову про «альтернативну історію», що виокремилася в самостійну літературну школу. У творах, написаних за її законами, неодмінний елемент сюжету – зміна історії в минулому. За ідеєю автора, на певному його етапі з якоїсь причини або випадково, або внаслідок утручання зовнішніх сил, наприклад, прибульців із майбутнього, твориться щось відмінне від того, що відбувалося в реальній історії. Те, що сталося, може бути пов'язане з широковідомими подіями чи особами, а може видаватися, на перший погляд, малозначним. Завдяки цьому події починають розвиватися за іншим сценарієм. Саме у світі зі зміненим минулим і розгортаються сюжети творів.
