Dritter Teil.

Sergey Iwanowitsch Koznyscheff wollte sich von der geistigen Arbeit erholen und ging – anstatt wie üblich ins Ausland – Ende Mai auf das Land zu seinem Bruder.
Seiner Überzeugung nach war das schönste Leben das Landleben, und er kam jetzt zu seinem Bruder, um dieses Leben zu genießen.
Konstantin Lewin war hocherfreut, umsomehr, als er den Bruder Nikolay für dieses Jahr nicht mehr erwartete, aber ungeachtet aller Liebe und Achtung, für Sergey Iwanowitsch, war es ihm nicht recht behaglich in Gesellschaft des Bruders auf dem Lande. Es war ihm peinlich, sogar unangenehm, die Auffassung seines Bruders vom Landleben zu beobachten. Für Konstantin Lewin war das Dorf der Ort seines Lebens, das heißt seiner Freuden und Leiden und seiner Mühen; für Sergey Iwanowitsch war das Dorf einerseits ein Erholungsort von der Arbeit, andererseits ein nützliches Gegengift für die Verderbnis, welches er mit Vergnügen und dem Bewußtsein seiner Nützlichkeit einnahm.
Konstantin Lewin war das Dorf deshalb lieb und wert, weil es für ihn die Laufbahn einer zweifellos nutzbringenden Wirksamkeit bildete, Sergey Iwanowitsch besonders deshalb, weil man sich daselbst dem süßen Nichtsthun überlassen konnte, ja mußte. Außerdem aber war Konstantin auch auf die Stellung Sergey Iwanowitschs dem Volke gegenüber nicht gut zu sprechen. Sergey Iwanowitsch sagte, er liebe und kenne das Volk, und unterhielt sich häufig mit den Bauern, was er gut zu thun verstand, ohne sich zu verstellen oder mit einer Miene dabei zu zucken. Aus jeder solchen Unterhaltung deduzierte er sich allgemeine Thatsachen, die zu Gunsten des Volkes sprachen und den Beweis liefern sollten, daß er dieses Volk verstehe.
